After excelling at 'A' level Art, John Pattison continued to paint in his spare time. Several years later he has developed a unique abstract style that, using a bold structure as his inspiration, extends lines and shapes, adding bright and varied colour.
John's subjects are often found in the North-East, an area of much recent regeneration, particularly in Blyth where he now lives.
That he adds colour, life and movement to static, monotone buildings reflects his hopes for further vibrancy and unity in his local area, believing that there is much goodness to be brought out in some maligned places.
John also enjoys the contrast between the strong, stayed lines of architecture and the natural spontaneity of the artist's touch. Furthermore, he is inspired by Cubism's desire to portray an object as it exists, not just how it is seen from a given angle. These features combine to create art with both an instant impact and a depth worthy of further reflection.
Throughout December and January, several of John's acrylic on canvas works can be seen on display at The Art Works (www.theartworksgalleries.com) in Ouseburn, Newcastle upon Tyne.
