Ain't Misbehavin' at The Bakehouse Gallery.

A splash of colour and humour hits Alnwick this summer when local artist Michelle Milburn unveils her new collection of paintings at the Bakehouse Gallery. The brand new colourful acrylic paintings feature cheeky humorous ladies inspired by the terraced street camaraderie of the 1950's.

'I have been  painting the terraced streets for a couple of years now' says Michelle 'so it seemed a natural progression to start painting the characters I imagine living there'.

Although Michelle grew up in rural Northumberland near Alnwick, she spent a lot of her childhood visiting relatives in Tyneside, and it was the ladies who ran these communities that have stuck in her mind. 'Everyone has someone they can think of who could fit into these paintings, whether its an aunt, grandmother or the woman who ran the corner shop.

It's the cheeky twinkle in their eye, the loud laugh, the witty remark and above all else the sense of fun and warmth these characters portray' she explains.  'Although sometimes it can be a difficult challenge to get the painting out of my head and onto the canvas it's just so much fun being involved in the process.  I hope that people can see the light hearted humour that I want to inject into my paintings and have a little giggle, a little escapism from the real world'

Michelle has painted all her life hugely encouraged by her family and teachers alike, there has never been a time when art and painting didn't feature in her life.  'I love art; looking, painting' being absorbed by it, it's all intoxicating, part of who I am'.  She now works from her studio at her home on the Wallington Estate near Morpeth where she lives with her husband, daughter and a menagerie of animals.

For the past couple of years Michelle's work has travelled the length and breadth of the UK to be shown at  Art Fairs and events and many pieces are now held in collections around the world.  This new series of work will be out in print and card format later this year.

The exhibition titled 'Ain't Misbehavin'!' previews at the Bakehouse Gallery in Alnwick on 3rd September 7pm-9pm and the exhibition continues until 25th September. Please checkout Michelle's website at www.michellemilburn.co.uk or call 01670 774226 for further exciting details and to be sent an invitation to the preview.
