Jim gets cover of "North East Life".

Acclaimed County Durham photographer Jim Gibson has seen success yet again with one of his images being chosen for the cover of "North East Life". In between his busy schedule he managed to give us a few words to tell us about it.
I took this image (as I do for most shots) as an addition to my stock library. It was photographed on film using a Bronica medium format camera which gives a 6x6cm transparency; this enables the image to be cropped vertically or horizontally as required.
It was taken from Church Hill on the opposite side of the River Aln estuary to Alnmouth village itself. Most of the images you see from this location feature the wooden cross in the foreground so I decided to leave it out and compose an image of the bay itself to include the two fishermen on the beach. There was some lovely light around that day and I used a polarising filter to cut through the reflections of the sun on the surface of the sea. The shot has sold very well in print form and was also used as the cover image on the 2009 NE calendar published by Judges.
It's latest use was as the cover image for the June edition of North East Life magazine and I attach thumbnails of the original image and the cropped cover version to illustrate how it was adapted. When composing images like this it's always important to leave spaces for the magazine title and straplines etc but the image also has to work independently - that's the challenge!"
An extensive range of Jim’s images can be seen by visiting his website at www.jim-gibson.com. Commissions within the specialist areas are also considered and Jim can be contacted at info@jim-gibson.com or on 0191 3711398.
